Workshop

Workshop 1: Developing an ICT in Education Strategic Plan, Dr. Nancy Law

The aim of this workshop was to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and working methods to be able to identify key components and considerations in developing and ICT education strategic plan at national, regional, district or institutional levels. An important focus of this workshop is to help participants to clarify their vision for ICT implementation in schools and to understand that different strategic goals requires different supporting conditions and hence different implementation strategies and resources. This workshop is designed to be a highly interactive event and the workshop activities is designed for participants to work in teams comprising members from different education sectors: policy makers, teachers educators, researchers, school principals and professional teacher organizations. Diversity of personal and professional backgrounds in team membership will help to bring different perspectives to bear when discussing issues related to policies and implementation strategies.

Workshop 2: Evaluation Design for Educational Technology Programs, Dr. Daniel Light

Effective evaluation should produce practical knowledge of how the ICT integration process can be designed to meet locally defined learning goals in education systems. The goal of this workshop is to discuss the design of effective evaluations and help audience participants address some of their own concerns in designing an evaluation.Using the experience of Intel® Teach, EDC will talk about how to decide upon appropriate research questions and how to identify pertinent indicators of success.  The workshop participants will break into groups to develop possible evaluation strategies for educational technology programs that they may be involved with. We will also discuss the different advantages of quantitative and qualitative methods and the differences of formative and summative evaluation.  The session will conclude with a brief discussion of how to use evaluation data to support program design and redesign to better accomplish overall program goals.

Workshop 3: Technology and Teacher Education, Dr. Punya Mishra

The art of teaching with ICT: Playing the TPACK game!

The single greatest contribution of information technology is that it caused us to rethink—everything — Anonymous

There is a computer disease that anybody who works with computers knows about. It’s a very serious disease … the trouble with computers is that you “play” with them — Richard P. Feynman

This workshop, led by Dr. Dr. Punya Mishra, is positioned at the intersection of the creative arts and teaching with ICT. Building on the TPACK framework, participants will be able to identify creative and artistic techniques for including technology in their teaching and how such approaches can add cognitive, inspirational, and aesthetic value to their instruction. This workshop offers insight into the pre-conditions required for the creative, artistic process to flourish, and processes and techniques by which we can produce creative solutions to pedagogical problems. Technology allows us to enhance the artistic and creative aspects of teaching through nurturing what Dewey identified as the four primary impulses for learning: inquiry, communication, construction and expression. This workshop will allow participants to think of ways in which they can creatively utilize technology to tap into these primary impulses for learning with the goal of designing educative, engaging and exciting learning experiences. Participants in this workshop will develop a better understanding of the artistic aspects of teaching with technology through interactive examples and hands-on activities aimed at all levels of education.

Not only is there an art in knowing a thing, but also an art in teaching it — Cicero

Workshop 4: Applying the Knowledge Ladder to the Policymaking Process in India, Dr. Robert Kozma
Dr. Robert Kozma will work with participants to apply the Knowledge Ladder in formulating the state and national policymaking process.  During the first part of the workshop, Dr. Kozma will help groups of participants identify the development model that is appropriate to their context and step through the components of the model to analyze their current policies and programs.   During the second part of the workshop, participants will consider changes in the various components of the education system—pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, teacher training, and school organization—that advance their economic and social development goals.  Participants will report out their plans to the larger group.
